The Career Farm Podcast 63 - Bringing London-inspired coffeeshops & bars to Harrogate - Tim Bosworth Hoxton North

Tim describes his journey to setting up the successful and stylish Hoxton North coffee shop and bar as a series of moments. When Tim was six, he was told to tie someone else's shoe laces and that was the moment he thought "No way! I don't want to do that!"  - starting him down a path of "not being told what do" that he's seldom strayed from!

At 11 his father passed away and he made the decision then that he must provide. Another death in the family, his elder sister aged 27, fuelled in him what he calls a 'searcher mentality' - a compulsion to continually question, to seek answers. As a consequence of this he ended up studying psychology at University.

The Career Farm Podcast 63 - Bringing London-inspired coffeeshops & bars to Harrogate - Tim Bosworth of Hoxton NorthIn 2002 he met his future wife in leeds,  they married and moved to London. Tim started work for a New Zealand software firm, but after three months in he got made redundant. He hated the feeling of being let go and not being in charge of his own destiny.

After a stint of working for Institute of Directors he then set up his own company 'Think Big, Be Big'. Tim describes it as a kind of Trip Advisor of its day.  While considering their future and a possible move to the North where they had family, Tim and his wife realised they spent most of their time in bars and restaurants. Despite no background in the hospitality industry they decided to set up the kind of coffee shop / bar they frequented in London. The result was Hoxton North, one of the best-loved independent coffee shops in Harrogate, with a second site due to open within weeks.

In the interview we cover:

  • What has been his biggest challenge
  • What where the 5 options he and his wife considered doing when leaving London
  • His advice based on what he has learnt so far
  • Why he is opening his second site and the challenges that brings
